The S6420+ adds 3-way rectifier switching (35W / 45W / 60W) to the Supro Thunderbolt!

The Supro Thunderbolt Plus amplifier adds switchable power amp topology to the legendary 1964 Supro Thunderbolt, giving you the original 35-Watt “Class A” Cathode bias sound as well as beefy 45-Watt and 60-Watt Grid bias modes for additional headroom and tonal variation. This unique design is implemented via a three-way selector switch on the front panel.

Normal and Extra-hot input options, combined with a wide range of available gain on tap, allow you to fine-tune the texture and response of this amp’s massive sound. Turned all the way up, the Thunderbolt exhibits nearly zero self-noise, yet it puts out enough volume to be easily heard on large venue and theatre stages, with overdrive completely controlled by the guitar’s volume knob. The 35-Watt and 45-Watt modes both deliver the sag and bluster of the 5U4 tube rectifier while the 60-Watt mode uses a silicon rectifier to unleash maximum Thunderbolt power. The 60-Watt mode’s faster transient response and ample headroom is wonderful for pedals, and brings the Supro sound loud and clear to any size venue.

Massive custom transformers and lightweight, vintage-correct cabinetry—combined with the best sounding 15” guitar speaker money can buy—put the Thunderbolt in a class of its own. In an effort to recreate the musical glory of the original Supro amplifiers, Supro has partnered with Eminence to bring you a series of USA-made speakers unlike anything else available today. Using a recipe that includes an edge-wound voice coil, ceramic magnet and lightweight stiff paper cone, the custom speakers found in Supro amplifiers deliver vintage American tone, with far more power handling, superior efficiency and nice firm bottom. With the amp turned all the way up, chords ring with exceptional clarity and definition amidst copious amounts of tube overdrive and output-stage saturation. The variable power switching found in the Thunderbolt Plus model is an over-the-top hot-rod custom luxury guitar experience, decadently brought to you by Bruce Zinky and Dave Koltai.

The reincarnation of the Supro brand sounds pretty good. They are great clean amps, and being a pedal fan, are great platforms for my pedals.

Comments about Supro S6420+ Thunderbolt Plus 1X15" Combo Guitar Amp:

I have used a ton of amps. Fenders, Voxs, Oranges, Ampegs as well as some newer boutiques like Bogner, 65 Amps, etc.

For pure cleans and LOUD breakup these amps kill them all.
This amp has some of the best clean tone available, throw a reverb pedal in there and you will not believe what you are hearing. Its THAT tone you have been searching for. It IS hard to get much breakup at low volume but usually a stomp is best for that anyhow.

Amp sounds best when at 35 and is wonderful for recording through medium gigs. Sounds is not too compromised as you turn the wattage up and it really can get LOUD!

This company is doing it right, build quality is insanely nice. Amps designed by legend Bruce Zinky. Real USA Eminence Speakers. The Hi/Lo inputs are very versatile. Plug a humbucker guitar into the Hi and get pretty immediate crunch. Plug a low output single coil in and it fattens/livens it up. You get the idea.

The 1x15 works great for baritone and humbucker guitars. Works good with a good variety of Singles as well.

Oh and did I mention it looks GORGEOUS!

Take a look at the Coronado as well as it sounds unbelievable and is my personal favorite!

A Modern Take On a Holy Grail Tone

    By

    from Indianapolis, IN

Comments about Supro S6420+ Thunderbolt Plus 1X15" Combo Guitar Amp:

A hot-rodded version of the reissued Thunderbolt, the Supro S6420+ Thunderbolt Plus tube guitar amplifier features a three-way rectifier switch option for more headroom and versatility. Like the Fender Bassman, the Thunderbolt was originally intended to be a bass amplifier. While far from a stellar bass amp, the Thunderbolt quickly became a holy grail tone device for electric guitar players. Indeed, the first time you crank up the Thunderbolt Plus, you'll be treated to a huge, raw, overdriven, rock 'n' roll tone cascading from a custom designed 15" Supro TB15 speaker. Make no mistake, the Supro S6420+ Thunderbolt Plus tube guitar amplifier produces pure rock 'n' roll power! The S6420+ includes a three-way rectifier switch that adds modern headroom and gigging versatility to the Thunderbolt. With the S6450+, you're given the choice of a 35-watt (cathode-biased) or 45-watt (grid-biased) 5U4 tube rectifier mode, as well as a high power 60-watt (grid-biased) solid state rectifier setting.

This amp has legendary tone. Playing through this amp gives you plenty of options as far as output goes. Each of the three settings sounding just as the next. If you want an amp good for recording, home practice or live performance, this might be the amp you are looking for. The classic tone cant be understated.

Comments about Supro S6420+ Thunderbolt Plus 1X15" Combo Guitar Amp:

This is a great reissue of a somewhat classic amp. I have 2 original 60's original thunderbolts so I'm a bit particular of any reissue. The guys at Supro did a great job of recreating the tone and look of the original. I would highly recommend checking this amp out! I am a staff reviewer at Sam Ash Music.
