The World’s Most Copied Harmonica Design

A unique, beautifully mellow sound, based on a revolutionary concept: the Special 20 was the first diatonic harmonica in the world with reed plates recessed into the comb, creating a projecting plastic mouthpiece. This makes it more comfortable to play, and the most copied harmonica design worldwide. Its distinctive sound is perfect for everything from Folk and Country to Rock and Pop. The Special 20 offers everything a professional harpist needs, but it’s also the ideal beginner’s instrument thanks to its smooth playability and comparatively affordable price. If you’re not just looking for a companion for the first few steps, but one to take you all the way, the Special 20 is your best possible bet.

  • The reed plates are recessed for a more comfortable mouthpiece
  • Reliable performance under all climate conditions thanks to the resilient plastic comb
  • The cover plates have a small back opening to highlight the warm sound

Comments about Hohner 560 20 Special 20 Harmonica (Assorted Keys):

I bought this because I can't find the original special 20 with marine band written in the bottom corner. That is what is pictured on the site, but not what you get when you order. The product sent is the new special 20 "Progressive" that doesn't play quite as well. This is not only a Sam Ash problem, as I have ordered three times from 3 different places and done returns and still gotten the wrong thing. Someone, somewhere must have some of the originals left.

Comments about Hohner 560 20 Special 20 Harmonica (Assorted Keys):

I like the plastic comb; Special 20 is a good all-purpose harp. I play guitar and harp (keys A,C,D,F,G): country, folk, blues, pop, Cajun and zydeco. Eventually I blow them out and have to replace them. I understand they can sometimes be repaired, but I've never been good at it, so I look for deals -- buying the package of 3 saved about $15. Cheaper harps aren't worth getting.

Comments about Hohner 560 20 Special 20 Harmonica (Assorted Keys):

          I purchased Special 20 at
Hollywood store about a month ago. Key of C.
Everybody love this harp... great sound...,
          easy to play..., bla bla...
          But not for me.

2nd hole draw reed was almost dead when I played for first time.
Can't draw. No sound. Nothing but a wind noises.
And if I draw it too hard it makes ugly brass noise.
So I open it up and did some massage on 2nd reed
with a paper, very gently... Nothing's changed.
I wanted return this but... well,
I lost my receipt...!!!! That makes me crazy!

          It's been a month now.
And finaly, 2nd hole draw reed is totally dead.

I'm So upset... to Sam ash and hohners..
I think Sam ash can't do nothing about it. I know that...

I have Blues Harp (G) and Deuce and a quarter (A)
and they don't have any issue.
I don't understand why people love this harp.
          maybe I was unlucky....
maybe sam ash has bad quality harps in store.
          well, I don't know. I don't care now.
No more under 40 bucks Harmonicas and
No more Sam ash for me.

Comments about Hohner 560 20 Special 20 Harmonica (Assorted Keys):

The SP20 is one of the gold standards in diatonic harmonicas, but they tend to have quality check issues coming out of the factory. Often you'll buy one out of the box that has flat notes, or gets flat very quickly. The latest one I bought was like this, and when I took it apart to tune and gap it, the draw reed plate was discolored! And the cover plates were put on slightly crooked too. Jeesh.

But hey, I still love the sound and tone, so I come back for more. Also note that the SP20 isn't as durable as the Lee Oskar (another gold standard), so you might find yourself replacing your SP20 more often.

A big issue many have with the SP20 is the sharp comb edges. This becomes a pain when you're playing the 1 and 10 holes. Handy players will usually round out those edges with their tools.

Lastly, something to consider is the tuning. The SP20 is JI/compromised tuned, while the Lee Oskar and Golden Melody are ET tuned. This does make a difference, so try out both. People generally say that JI strikes a good balance between single note lines and chords, while ET is mainly good for single note lines.

Comments about Hohner 560 20 Special 20 Harmonica (Assorted Keys):

This harp has never let me down. I have tried so many different brands and models. None play as easy and sound so consistentley good all the time. They play smooth so breathing through them is no effort. I've been playing for about 40 years now so they are all I buy anymore.

Comments about Hohner 560 20 Special 20 Harmonica (Assorted Keys):

Perfect Blues Harp. Suprisingly many professional blues musicians use this harmonica (John Popper from Blues Traveler, although not the best blues harp player, certainly one of the more famous). I learned on this harmonica, have tried others, and you just can't get the same tone or easy bending capabilities from other harmonicas. If you are looking for other styles of harmonica playing, wood might be the way to go, but for blues harp, this is the gold standard.
