Exclusive to the Evans line are Hydraulic drumheads: heavy-duty, twin-ply heads with a layer of oil between the plies to greatly reduce resonance and emphasize the drum's lower overtones. Hydraulic heads are an excellent alternative to inconsistent methods of drumhead muffling.

Comments about Evans 14" Coated Black Hydraulic Snare Drum Head:

I purchased this, and an assortment of other Evans Hydraulic and complementing reso heads, from Sam Ash. I play in a somewhat unusual 'classic rock' band, that sticks to the slightly more obscure titles from the late '60s and early-mid '70s. We try to stay true to how those songs were originally presented, including the loud, satisfying 'thud' popular with the drummers I grew up listening to! Evans Hydraulics are absolutely perfect for that! That thin film of oil makes emulating the sound of drummers like John Bonham, Ginger Baker, etc., a cinch! They're easy to tune, and drastically reduce if not eliminate the need for Moongels, gaff tape, and the like, with proper tuning!

Please don't get the idea, though, that these heads are a 'one-trick pony!' Not so!! Careful selection of reso heads and a slight change in tuning, and they will deliver a nice variety of overtones and very pleasing resonance, for other genres. My (30-ish) son uses them as well, for everything from metal to funk! As a bonus, they are also very durable, and forgiving for even the hardest hitter!

I knew exactly what I wanted, when shopping for heads, and Sam Ash's extremely competitive pricing, and excellent customer service, made choosing them a 'no-brainer!' It's always nice to know that if you encounter a problem or need advice, their courteous, knowledgeable staff is always there and happy to assist in any way. I have, in the past, had to use those services, and have always been more than satisfied by Sam Ash's great people.

I am happy to recommend both Evans drum heads, and Sam Ash!

I use this snare head with my Tama ImperialStar kit that I got last year. I also got the Evans Onyx 2-Ply heads for my toms. Most definitely the best snare head I have ever used, for steel and wood. Also it looks sick. Great for Jazz,Rock,Blues,Metal,Thrash, and etc.
