SuperNATURAL Sounds
The HPD-20 comes with 850 onboard sounds that are already ready to play. This gives you an enormous library of ethnic percussion instruments from around the world, as well as melodic and orchestra instruments. Traditional drum kit sounds are also on tap, plus a large selection of electronic tones that are ideal for current music. All the sounds offer an incredible range of dynamic expression, thanks to the powerful combination of Roland’s SuperNATURAL sound engine and the ultra-sensitive response and unique functionality of the HandSonic pad interface. The HPD-20 provides 200 total kits—you can also freely modify any kit to your liking so you can get that perfect sound for any situation. In addition to its built-in sounds, the HPD-20 gives you the ability to import up to 500 of your own WAV sounds and play them from the pads. Just load up a USB flash drive with your favorite sounds from your computer, then connect it to the HPD-20 to import them, assign them to pads, and create your own kits. The types of sounds you can use are not limited to short percussion strikes—with up to 12 minutes of time available, you’re able customize your HandSonic with audio phrases, sound effects, backing music, and more. Once your sounds are in the HPD-20, you’re free to use them just like the onboard sounds, with complete editing and effects capabilities at your disposal.

Deep Editing and Dynamic Multi-Effects
Inside the HPD-20 is a full set of powerful tools for creating all-new sounds. When building user kits, it’s possible to edit every instrument individually by modifying its volume, pitch, decay, and more. You can also layer two sounds together and assign parameters to blend or switch them dynamically based on your playing velocity. Three independent multi-effects engines—each equipped with 25 different effects—provide rich sound-shaping options, from standard chorus and echo to intense effects such as distortion, filter, and bit crush that are ideal for dance music and electronica. The Realtime Modify knob allows you to tweak pitch and effects as you perform for expressive sound shaping on the fly, and ambience effects and EQ can be applied to an entire kit for final sweetening.

Quick Rec and USB
With the handy Quick Rec function, capturing a performance or idea is just a button press away. Play along with the built-in metronome for steady time as you record, or go without to capture playing without being constrained by a set tempo. Saving your recordings to a connected USB flash drive is just as easy—just hit the Export function button, adjust level and other parameters as desired, and save! You can back up your HPD-20 user kits and other settings to USB memory as well. The HPD-20’s USB Computer port makes it a breeze to connect to a Mac or Windows computer and use the powerful HandSonic pad interface to play virtual instruments and record beats in audio/MIDI music production software.

Comments about Roland HPD20 HandSonic Digital Hand Percussion:

The HPD-20 is one of the most creative trigger pads that Roland has produced to date. Not only are the pads incredibly sensitive and reactive, the ability to change pitches and EQ is seamless! After hours of playing and learning about the HPD-20, I'm confident in saying it is the most essential piece of electronic triggering for any percussionist. It offers tone, color, texture, and an ambient surrounding for your current set up, as well as the addition of hundreds of percussion sounds that you might not have thought to add!

This e-pad does way more than meets the eye. Once I got into messing around with this, I found so many things I haven't seen anywhere else. It is perfect for recording into any protools/music recording program. It has midi and flash. Changing loops on the fly is also really easy so this can also be used for live shows. Really amazing all the stuff this thing does.

The pads on the Handsonic are amazingly sensitive and responsive. The pressure sensitivity gives you a wide range of dynamics and effects. I love the pitch bend, mute and roll effects. All three of those are great ways to make special and dramatic moments. I am a staff reviewer at Sam Ash.

This upgraded HPD15 is just amazing. You can use this in all different situations, such as a home studio, a DJ set, add it to your drumkit, or just use it alone. You can use the bank of sounds to create plenty of beats in your studio, and even import more such as your own sounds, sound effects, or other tracks for backing. The pads make this so easy to use and a lot of fun. A DJ could use this to add beats and make looping tracks to scratch over. You could also add this to your set up already as a drummer and go wild!

Comments about Roland HPD20 HandSonic Digital Hand Percussion:

OK, the HPD-20 seems an entirely new instrument, rather than an upgrade to the HPD-15, and for the most part, this is Great. Its awesome to play this thing.. very intuitive setup, and the sound set is much more modern. So i appreciate most of the improvements, and some of the "changes"; however, Buyer Beware: One of the most sought-after features is not functioning. The USB driver 1.0 for computer connectivity DOES NOT WORK WITH MAC OSX 10.8x. i have tried 3 different recent model Macs, and different versions of the OS. (next i will try an older MacBook Pro running 10.6x or 10.7x) I sent Roland tech support an email and they replied that they "are ordering a Mac from their IT department" so they can try this out. (!) (Really? for the first time?) I tried calling Roland tech support to see if i'd have more luck, but had to spend 40 minutes on hold listening to the cheesy looped commercials for their guitar products before i hung up in utter frustration. Also, for loading one's own samples, i've tried 3 different USB sticks, with different formatting, and i have yet to get one to be recognized. Amazing that the manual merely recommends that one purchase the Roland USB stick (probably at highly inflated price) rather than give the user any simple specifications (size, formatting specs, etc), to save too much trial and error. This is typical big corporation dis-connect, so for anybody out there hoping to load your own samples or connect directly to a computer without need for stand-alone audio interface; i would suggest that you hold off from buying this new product until you can confirm that the features you need are fully functioning. Too bad, 'cause it sounds great :)
