Comments about Tama Silverstar "Cocktail-Jam" 4-Piece Drum Set:

As the kit is part of the Silverstar range the drums share the same specs as all Silverstar drums; so the shells are 100 percent (and clearly high-grade) birch - 6-ply (snare and toms) and 7-ply (bass drum) - and the low mass lugs and Sound Arc hoops are standard Silverstar components. Bearing edges are accurately cut at 45°, while the open bottom ends of the shells of the two toms and bass drum have been sanded flat. The full diameter hardware is made to Tama's usual standard and locks the kit together solidly. with the design of the bass drum and tom, the tom act as a kind of woofer, with each stroke from the bass drum creating lively sympathetic resonance.

Comments about Tama Silverstar "Cocktail-Jam" 4-Piece Drum Set:

This is a great kit for home use...and can be used for small venues and can also be mic'd. It took quite a bit of time to figure out the head selection, as the clear stock heads ring way too much for a small space (home)...the concert toms are loud in general...with a clear single ply head on them in a small space, the sound can be way too jarring and out of balance. For heads, I found the Aquarian Response 2s work rather well with the kit. The Bass drum leaves a lot to be desired...and can be tweaked...I replaced the tom hoop with a 16" 6 ply bass drum hoop (1.5"). It worked rather well and did not interfere with the pedal. The hoop change opened up head options and I found the Aquarian Super Kick II and Force I bass drum heads work very well. The trick to the bass drum that works even if you dont use a bass hoop...is to set the beater off center of the drum by 1-2 inches depending on the amount of attack and lows you want based on the different heads. If you set the beater dead center, it sounds like a someone is knocking at the front door...the sound cone hits the concert tom above dead center and will produce an awful ring depending on the head. If you place the beater off center, it sounds more like a bass drum and you can perform rock. Note: you will need to pay careful attention to the tuning of the floor tom to round out the bass drum. ...I do wish Tama had provided a bass hoop...or just went with a 16" floor tom and a jungle jig. In any event, you can get the sound where you want it with or without the hoop. Better with the hoop however because of the bass head options out there (built-in muffling)...but absent the modification, you can still muffle with felt, moongel and/or rings. The only other nit pick is the pedal...nice that it is included...however...I added the Cobra Coil accessory to make it work better ($30)...and I suggest changing the Tama standard spring that is on the pedal (black) with the Tama hard spring (chrome...$5)...it helped a great deal to make the pedal more fluid with the added resistance. Overall a great kit...and for the money a great practice and performance kit...and if you have kids, it would probably make a great starter set if you are tight on space.

Comments about Tama Silverstar "Cocktail-Jam" 4-Piece Drum Set:

this drum set is great for a jazz drummer who is stuck in a small corner. it delivers a loud tone on the toms. If your a street performer you will love this, fold it up and throw it in your back seat, or carry it in the drum bag it comes with, I don't like tama stock drum heads so I would change the heads asap. set up was a little confusing but once you set it up for the first time you wont forget how to do it ever again. it has concert style toms so it delivers quit a bit overtones. overall , cool drums.
