This book has the material to develop the three R's: Reading, Rudiments, and Rock. The exercises are presented in thirty separate lessons, and each lesson is notated on two facing pages. The left hand page contains the reading, while the right hand page shows rudimental-type exercises under the heading HAND EXERCISES. Below those are exercises for developing skill in the area of rock drumming. At the end of the thirty lessons there's a special section for jazz drumming, as well as basic dance beats and variations. The final four pages are simply blank manuscript for teachers to write their own exercises.

Comments about Charles Dumont & Son Joel Rothman Reading Rudiments and Rock:

I'm a big fan of Joel Rothman's instructional books. My favorites are The Ultimate Rock and Roll Bible of Coordination for True Believers, Rock Breaks Around the Drums, Sticking Patterns, and Rolls Rolls Rolls. This one Reading, Rudiments, and Rock Drumming, as the title implies, has a little bit of everything. This may sound derogatory but it's not...it's kind of like a flea market of drum exercises, and has not only what's in the title, but also some world beats and jazz style coordination exercises. For a book that perhaps lacks a definitive focus, everything in it is extremely worthwhile. If you want to check out a drum book with a little of everything to drop the needle on, this is a very cool one.
