As a dedicated guitar enthusiast, aeronautical pioneer and Ovation founder Charles Kaman decided to apply aircraft engineering technology, science, and material to the age-old art of guitar making and succeeded in doing what few have done — revolutionizing the acoustic guitar.
In 1966, Ovation was born with the idea of improving acoustic guitar sound with high tech design and construction. Ovation guitars arrived on the scene with round back in an acoustically engineered parabolic bowl shape, used to dramatically reduced feedback and allow for greater amplification. Ovation also introduced a new material, Lyrachord, into guitar making. This composite material gave the instrument unprecedented projection and ringing sustain while doing away with the structural weaknesses created in the orthogonal joining of the sides. These enhancements delivered a lightweight and sonically resonant body helping to create Ovation's signature note-to-note balance and projection. Professional musicians hailed the Ovation's performance while purists shook their heads, and the success of this company has been undeniable since.
In the early 1980s, Ovation, continuing its tradition of American Innovation and New England craftsmanship, introduced shallow-bowl guitars to appeal to electric guitarists looking for an acoustic sound.
Being one of the premier brands of Acoustic Electric Guitars, Ovation prides itself on offering their groundbreaking sound to all guitar enthusiasts at a variety of price points. The Applause line has the same on-board technology as the higher end series, but with a laminate top, making it perfect for beginners. The Celebrity Series expands on the Applause offering a variety of ornate and solid wood tops, sound hole and body depth options, and doublenecks, which offer you the magical combination of a 6- and 12-string guitar.
With all of these series offering a varied body depth, back shapes, and wood options, the Balladeer takes you back to Ovation's roots offering “Vintage Lyrachord” backs and the retro-styling of the '60s and '70s. Ovation outdoes itself with the signature Legend Series which includes the Al Di Meola Guitar, a guitar named for a jazz musician who holds the most prestigious guitar awards (of any guitarist in the world) from the highest rated guitar poll in the world, Guitar Player Magazine.
Sam Ash is proud to be a distributor of Ovation, which continues to successfully introduce cutting edge technology while interweaving quality craftsmanship into the world of Acoustic Guitars.
