Comments about Zoom B3 Bass Effects & Amp Simulator Pedal:

I've tried many multi-fx units for bass by several companies. Line 6, Digitech, Zoom, Rocktron, and none of them have ever really (in my opinion) had anything special to offer me. Mind you, I'm not big on effects, but this unit has tons of usefulness for many different areas. I mainly use it for silent practicing at home, as well as home-studio demos. I am undecided whether or not I will use it for my group's upcoming studio sessions.

The first thing I enjoyed was the straight out-of-the-box, plug and play simplicity; which I failed to find in the B3's more expansive cousin, the B9.1UT. No complicated digital monitor, no endless arrangement of buttons, no picking and choosing which modulations/stomps you want on or off. Just three stomps (or an amp model) of your choosing, in any order. No more mind-boggling signal chains, which was all a big plus. My favorite feature is the simplicity, though it surely doesn't skimp on the options to choose from.

Unlike most multi-fx units which contain non-organic patches that sound too fake and digital, I could find many examples of effects on the B3 that were warm, organic, and full sounding. Distortions are warm and crunchy, and modulation stomps are responsive to every nuance of playing. Even the bass synth emulators blew my mind. They sounded much more effective than even the famous SYB stomps from Boss. My only concern was with several of the delay settings. I feel that the delay rates were not as adjustable as they could have been.

All in all, I think that the Zoom B3 can be very useful to anyone in a home-studio situation. Even somebody performing with a full band needing a DI option, or a silent practice tool, can make a lot of use out of this.
