Good Horn for the Money

Comments about Buffet 400 Series Professional Tenor Saxophone (Brass Matte Finish):

Bought this horn almost a year ago because of the brass matte lacquer. That really makes the horn special. Saw the gold and didn't care for it as much. Reviews on the web complain about the sound because of the "c-melody"-like curved neck. I don't see it as a big problem, albeit I would like to get my hands on the "corrected" replacement neck. Otherwise, I like the sound and feel of this horn. It's NOT a tank like my 80 year old Martin, but it's fun to play. Just don't drop it... (and you don't have to pay [$] for it either)

Comments about Buffet 400 Series Professional Tenor Saxophone (Brass Matte Finish):

I play my horn mostly in our Church Band. With different mouthpieces and reed combos, this horn can wail, or sound so sweet you'll want to look for Kleenex..:) I have owned a MK VI, and many Cannonballs, but I kept coming back to this horn. The workmanship appears to be A-1, nice engraving on the Matte finish. I can't think of anything that isn't great about this horn. The best way to try this horn is with your own mouth piece and reed set-up. Definitely don't use the in-store reeds and the standard mouth piece. Using your own set-up will let you know pretty much how the horn will sound. I use a C. Lakey *6 with Vandoren Jazz 2 reeds.
Try it. I don't think you will be disappointed. Buffet has a true winner here.

Comments about Buffet 400 Series Professional Tenor Saxophone (Brass Matte Finish):

I bought the lacquered finished one since I'm more of a traditionalist. I've own Buffet Crampon altos, sopranos and now tenor. I find their mechanisms very fluid and comfortable. The horns provide dark, sweet tones. Beautifully crafted instrument that produces a very resonant tone in all registers.
