Comments about Alfred Sound Innovations for Concert Band, Book 1-Bass Guitar (Book/CD/DVD):

Being a big fan of Aaron Stang, I am, unfortunately, very disappointed in this book/DVD. The biggest gripe that I have is that there are just too few examples to practice. Something new is introduced, you practice it once (twice if you are lucky) and then you move on to the next new thing. I realize that more examples mean more pages in the book but without sufficient examples the material is not really mastered. Another thing that I disliked was that they were inconsistent with the tabbing out of the melodies. In some cases, the melodies were in both standard notation and in tab but in other pieces, the tab of the melodies was omitted to make room for the rhythm (slash) notation. To make it more consistent and easier to follow, they should have included the standard notation, melody tab, and the slash notation. Again, this was done to save paper but it really detracts from the usability of the book. Another major problem is that this book is billed as Book 1 but there is no book 2 or 3 like in other methods so you are left hanging as to where to go from there. I even emailed the authors about availability of a second or third book but never received a response. I was truly disappointed.
