The Shure SM58 is the leading professional microphone of all time.  Chances are you have either used an SM58 or have been told that this is the microphone to buy.  With excellent feedback rejection, the SM58 is a great all around microphone for live performance, although it really shines as a mic for vocals.  The SM58 is also at home in the recording studio (the SM actually stands for Studio Microphone).

The Shure SM58 is the swiss-army knife of microphones. Although designed for vocals, its clean, natural tone can be useful for a variety of miking needs. It's legendary ruggedness and reliable performance has placed it on the short list of "must have" microphones for all musicians. It's known to have an "easy-to-mix" tonal characteristic with a slight mid-range boost and bass rolloff, emphasizing the clarity of the vocal mids. Nothing fancy, just one of the first indespensible recording/performing tools for your arsenal.

Features:

  • Frequency response tailored for vocals, with brightened midrange and bass rolloff
  • Cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source and minimizes background noise
  • Pneumatic shock-mount system cuts down handling noise
  • Effective, built-in spherical wind and pop filter
  • Supplied with break-resistant stand adapter which rotates 180 degrees
  • Lengendary Shure quality, ruggedness and reliability
  • Cardioid (unidirectional) dynamic
  • Frequency response: 50Hz-15kHz

Comments about Shure SM-58 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

This is the vocal mic that all others are measured by. It's not that it sounds better than others, or even offers greater features. It doesn't. It just works. Every time. No matter what. I've been involved with music for over 20 years, from college, to retail, to manufacturing and I've yet to see one of these not perform. They're used everywhere for a reason. They have a flat, nature sound that makes mixing a breeze. That's basically it. A great value and you know what to expect.

Comments about Shure SM-58 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

Shure's SM58 is the most popular handheld vocal microphone and for good reason. They continue to deliver the sonic quality that musicians have become familiar with while delivering the durability needed to be used in club and bar gigs night after night. I won't go to a gig without an SM58.

This is the best microphone you can buy for the money. The SM58 is definitely the only choice. Unless you plan to spend a little more to get the Beta.

[...]for $[...], this is a steal. This is probably one of, if not, the best microphone on the market, especially for the price. The bottom line is that I won't bring the PA without a few of these.

"Best rough-and-tumble mic out there, bar-NONE"

            By

            from Undisclosed

Comments about Shure SM-58 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

"First of all, if you're not familiar with the SM58, when they say world standard, they're not exaggerating. I've played plenty of live shows and this mic REALLY stands out compared to three or four other Peaveys I tried, which were about worthless. Any other mic isn't worth your time if you only want to spend about $100, which this mic is WELL WORTH. I'd have bought it at the list price. Second of all, who uses SM58s? Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Jonathan Davis and Head of Korn, Chad Gray of Mudvayne, Coby Dick of Papa Roach, Aaron Lewis of Staind, Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit, Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian of System of a Down, Scooter Ward of Cold, and countless other rock, pop, and punk bands since the mic was first introduced years and years ago. Anyway, I've thrown mine across the room, dropped it on concrete, beaten it against my head, everything and although the screen has a few dents, the mic works PERFECTLY. The range is great for really melodic, soaring opera-like full lung singing and the durability makes it perfect for screamers and yellers. If you're just starting off with singing, whether it be anything from pop, opera, punk, or alterna-metal like myself, there is absolutely NO MIC better suited for you than the SM58. I wouldn't trade it for any other."
