Gretsch’s 6.5 x 14” Oak Stave Snare Drum is unlike anything else you’ve ever played. Stave shells are a little bit different than your typical ply drums. The process of making a stave drum is very similar to that of making a barrel. Stave drums are composed of select pieces of hardwood that are bound together and glued at the edges. This drum is made from thirty pieces of solid cherry wood that are pinned together with absolute precision. Each piece is 7/8’s of an inch thick, so needless to say this drum has a huge sound that is full-bodied with plenty of resonance. One benefit of stave drums is that it significantly cuts down on the amount of glue in the drum. Glue as we all know is a dead sounding material, and kills the tone of your drums. On average, this “stave” process uses less than 5% of the glue than your typical ply drum of the same size. This gives you a pure, true sound that is full and robust. It is finished in a natural satin lacquer which allows the true beauty of the wood to speak for itself.Oak is one of the loudest materials available. Needless to say, this thing will cut through anything. Wonderful for live situations, oak has an almost naturally eq’d sound. It is warm, thick, and deep with a thunderous attack and dark fundamental. It also has a vast tuning range and sounds great in any register. It’s no wonder players such as Brian Viglione, Tommy Aldridge, and Akira Jimbo have all flocked to oak drums.
This snare also features 3.0mm triple-flanged hoops; these heavy-duty hoops help keep this drum in tune longer, and give it a rim-shot like a shotgun blast.
