This drum features a 1mm rolled steel shell that delivers a warm, focused sound that is sharp and articulate with excellent definition. The 13” diameter gives you a sharp, brighter sound with a distinguishable crack while the 7” depth gives you that bottom, depth, and full bodied sound you want out of a snare.
This drum, like much of the other Starphonic’s, features the patented Tama grooved hoops, freedom lugs, linear-drive strainer, adjustable butt plate, and super sensitive hi-carbon snappy snares.
Grooved Hoops
The grooved hoop system is a truly remarkable innovation as it manages to combine vintage design and modern innovation. The hoop is completely undrilled which helps give the drum a warm, open sound while the claw hooks manage to provide unrivaled stability and tuning precision. The hoops are technically only single flange but they play and feel like a die-cast, although they are much livelier and not as weighed down. Needless to say this makes playing cross sticking patterns and rim shot’s a dream.
Freedom Lugs
These lugs really help to give this drum a classy look while making head changes a breeze. These lugs feature a pivoting piece of threaded tubing that allows the tension rods to be pointed away from the drum. This allows you to remove the head with minimal loosening and guarantees you will not lose or drop the washers, claws, or tension rods. Finally a company has taken all of the hassle out of changing heads. Thanks to Tama, it’s never been easier to enjoy that fresh head feel or sound. These lugs are also extremely low-mass. This means there is less contact between the hardware and the shell. This helps to give you a truer sound with extended resonance and sustain.
Linear-Drive Strainer
This throw off may be one of the best innovations we’ve seen from Tama in recent years. The “linear-drive” strainer was designed to give more control over the use of the adjustment arm. You won’t hear that usual slap when the snares hit the bottom head. This guarantees a seamless transfer when going between snare sounds. This Strainer also keeps the snare wire/tape holder at a 30 degree angle to reduce any and all unnecessary pressure on the strainer as well as the shell. This helps improve resonance while giving the drum a truer tone. This 30 degree angle also helps eliminate unwanted buzzing.
Fully Adjustable & Detachable Butt-Plate
This butt-plate is full adjustable and features a ratchet styled tension adjuster, not unlike the one found on the throw off. This guarantees precise and accurate snare setting. As if this wasn’t enough, this snare is also completely detachable. This makes it easier than ever to swap out your resonant head. The best part is that this doesn’t affect the snare tension at all, so when you snap the butt-plate back on you’re getting that perfect setting you had right before you even changed the head. Super Sensitive Hi-Carbon Snappy Snare
