A-Design 500-Series components.

One of the most integral components in preamp design is the transformer, which uses the voltage to process the sound and also keeps it from adding noise to the ultimate resulting signal. How those transformers are wound, using any of a choice of metal alloys, directly impacts the color of the sound, giving it a particular personality. Modern transformers can be "transparent," coming out of the preamp with little or no change from how it sounded on the way in, or it could be given a certain amount of "color." How alloys like treated steel, nickel, cobalt and iron, are  combined in the windings plays a crucial role in the character in the resulting sound the preamp puts out.

A-Designs Audio has created five 500 Series preamps with different character, making each of them useful for particular uses, depending on your preferences.

The EM-Blue Preamp is equipped with a nickel custom-wound output transformer for accentuated highs. It produces an airier, more top-end oriented tone than its EM-Series brothers and sisters. Many aspects of recording can be counter-intuitive; and, in many cases, you’ll want to pair opposites. For example, when used with a dark-sounding microphone or an alto vocalist, the brighter EM-Blue can open the sound up perfectly. This pre is also useful for providing a crisp “crack” when recording a snare drum. If you use the direct input, you just might fall in love with how an electric guitar sounds going thru its nickel transformers.  The EM-Blue has a -20dB pad that enables you to get down and dirty with an electric guitar - just switch in the pad and crank the gain for a slight growl.
